Development and Evaluation of Web-based Tool for the SE-oriented Empathy Scale

The tool development focuses on creating a web-based application to support the practical implementation of the SE-oriented empathy scale. This tool is designed to automate the calculation of empathy scores and provide tailored recommendations to software practitioners, making the empathy scale accessible and actionable in real-world SE contexts. In addition to the development of the tool, this study aims to evaluate its usability and effectiveness and conduct an additional round of validation for the empathy scale with SE students.

The web-based tool is being developed as part of the Final Year SE student project, involving iterative design and development guided by stakeholder feedback. The tool incorporates functionalities to compute empathy scores based on the SE-oriented empathy scale and generate personalised recommendations for practitioners. To evaluate the tool, a usability study will be conducted with SE students, focusing on its ease of use, effectiveness, and the clarity of the generated results and recommendations. In addition, the tool will be employed for another round of validation of the SE-oriented empathy scale. SE students will use the tool to complete the empathy scale, and their responses will be analysed to validate the scale. These efforts aim to enhance the accessibility, reliability, and applicability of the SE-oriented empathy scale, contributing to its broader adoption in SE practices.
